Dim All the Lights, Baby!

I spent most of Sunday getting up the nerve to change out a dimmer switch in my living room. Not being an electrical sort of lady - the task appeared, well - scary, at best. But determined to have that really pretty chandelier working, pressed me forward. I hadn't had any luck conning anyone into helping me.(smile) It was do or die.

YouTube was a wealth of knowledge. In fact I was now more frightened but needed that chandelier working for the holiday season. YES, I had plans! This was going to happen. I would be dimming lights by Tuesday - uh, sure.

The chandelier is fine. The dimmer switch was broken or so I thought. Please pause and read that sentence again. On YouTube, this one video spoke of having two separate switches on two different walls. My mind suddenly came to a screeching halt. I have two switches. I have two switches!!! Is it possible that for the last three years the chandelier and the dimmer have actually been working but.... I stopped the video and rushed into the living room. Sure enough, the switch on the opposite wall was in the on position. That meant the switch I had been using to turn the chandelier on and off was not broken. I turned the dimmer switch to the right and hot dang! Lights! Hmm, dc, feeling dim?

To celebrate: Donna Summer - Dim All the Lights

How about a cute water bottle party chandelier?

  1. so the one switch is for turning it on and off and the other for dimming? We don't have dimming options here, we is so medieval :)

    4. Nooo! You two must patch things up, I know both of you and I know nobody meant no harm, you two are some of the kindest people in the blogosphere and need to fix it! For me :) ... pretty please....

    5. I went over to apologize and saw the rant and all of those people who don't know me, taking me apart. She told you, forget it, it's not worth it. She called me rude and wrote a blog calling me out. What can I say. I'm sorry I was rude but I thought what you did was rude? That won't work. There were at least 40 people agreeing with her. Let her win. I've closed my blog.

    6. but people tend to do that. I had a situation like that when me and one of the most influential bloggers (with whom I was best of friends) parted ways: he also wrote a post about it and kinda trashed me (undeservedly) and all of his readers supported him (without even knowing whom he was speaking about).... She was just caught unprepared and nobody actually understands what actually happened. I believe it was some kind of misunderstanding. No need to close the blog for such a silly thing.
Can I ask why did you unfollow her in the first place, because that seems to be the starting point of the whole misunderstanding?

    7. Dezmond - I put in more hours on that blog than this one. I know you understand doing research and planning what goes on your space and when. That blog only has an image every day - no back story - it is the post for the day. So when she took my image - she took my post. Granted there was a link back, but no one clicked through to offer me the actual credit for my post. There was no increase in comments - except at her site. I felt cheated and disappointed. She could have told me beforehand that she would taking the image - and yes, I get it, images are pretty much free - I had been holding this out for 8 months before using it. But the image is the post itself and why did she have to post it at her site on the same day? The same day?
When you put the kind of time that I do - it's sad that someone else puts nothing in and yet he/she gets all the kudos. It felt horribly unfair. She stated that she stole it and indeed she did, but then she justified her behavior by saying the image was already all over the internet. So she could have found it on her own - but she didn't.
To me it looked like she had no plans for her blog for the day and since I am a very small unknown blog - I was easy prey - she suddenly had a quick-ass post and she knew it.
At first I thought that maybe she might be trying to help promote my blog by offering a link back to it. Let's just say I was giving the benefit of a doubt because I did not want to feel the hurt and anger this generated. My whole post is gone. Three comments on mine compared to her 50-something comments. She stole my thunder. There was nothing I could do, and nothing I can do now except suck it up.
I wrote a comment which I later deleted. I told her she had 372 followers - she'd never miss me but she might miss my research. I could read my own posts at my my own home. So I stopped following her.
I'm not asking anyone to take my side. I don't care. I know I did the work for that post and every posts you read on both of my blogs. I am proud of my work. I handled it badly but then again it was the only way I could express my displeasure.
Please try to understand - it was my post for the day - to help ME generate comments. And it was a great joke! Right?
      Thank you for your concern.

  3. YouTube is becoming the new Google. Just last week I replaced a sensor in my car, using nothing more than a YouTube tutorial. Took less than 5 minutes. Who knew YouTube was useful for more than just hilarious cat videos?

  4. It's truly amazing the good information people put on You Tube and various forums for free! I have heard that even doctors will secretly Google their patient's symptoms when seeking help for a diagnosis. So: far from being dim-witted you have been very clever!
(Love Donna Summer -saw her some years ago at the Royal Albert Hall in London when there was a huge protest outside by gays because she had said it was a sin or something - great fun!)

    1. Bazza - Lucky you!! I would have loved to have seen her in concert. In fact seeing anyone at Royal Albert Hall would tickle me.

My first eight track was Donna Summer - drove my parents crazy! Of course we know the eight tracks are gone... but the lights are on!

  7. Hell, even I couldn't put in a dimmer switch. (Well, hell, I'm not very mechanically inclined to begin with. But my Brother could put in a dimmer switch... which is why I let him live. Hate to admit it, but I might need him someday.)

Your comment on my BOTB was still sweet, even if you let me down.

OK, True Story: Today's (12/01/2014) "Battle Of The Bands" blog bit was NOT supposed to be Leroy Anderson Vs. Glenn Miller's Orchestra. In fact, it was already set up days ago and all I needed to do was click "Publish". It was going to feature DONNA SUMMER as one of the two contestants on a totally different song (NOT 'Sleigh Ride'). But at work today, about 5 A.M., I suddenly decided to change the song to 'Sleigh Ride" and use Leroy Anderson and Glenn's Orchestra.

My 12/15/2014 BOTB song is supposed to be 'MARY, DID YOU KNOW' with two different singers than what FarAwayEyes used today for that same song (i.e., Pentatonix and Gnarles Barkley).

But now I'm thinking I'll go back to DONNA SUMMER and the "Other" artist for December 15th's 'Battle Of The Bands', rather than use the song 'Mary, Did You Know'.

Decisions, decisions! This BOTB stuffs is getting too damned stressful!

    1. A most fortunate blessing for me. Screwdrivers and electricity make me shudder. I have a brother I feel the same way about.(smile)

With your build up of Leroy, how could I possibly let you down? It was against every fiber of my being to let Glenn down. (Somewhere in the background of my mind I heard Jimmy Stewart saying - "Uh - why you wanna go and do that? Vote for La-roy?") (I saw the Glenn Miller story as a child - really - small child - loved it)

Donna Summer was always the go-to track for getting dressed to go out. I'd be interested to know which song and what other artist you'll pit against her? So now we wait!

Glad you visited and what a fun comment!

    2. Back in 1993 or very early '94, I turned a coworker onto the movie 'THE GLENN MILLER STORY', which he LOVED because he was a very "Retro Guy" who wished men were still wearing overcoats and fedoras.

The movie immediately became one of his all-time Top 25 favorites. Unfortunately, not long later I happened to mention to him that in fact 'LITTLE BROWN JUG' was actually one of the earliest songs that Glenn Miller's Orchestra had recorded and that the way they used it to create the emotional tug at the end of the movie was really a fictional element of the screenplay.

I hadn't anticipated that this knowledge would severely impact his feelings about the movie, but it was such a disappointment to him that 'The Glenn Miller Story' was immediately downgraded in his mind. I regretted having mentioned it to him.

    3. I really enjoyed "The Glenn Miller Story." Maybe because I already knew most all of his music. Little Brown Jug is a cute tune. Even today, I can't watch it without tearing up. Kinda like "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye! Old stuff but good stuff. Today we have a lot of junk.
Well, I'm rambling. Better go. I'm still undecided on the BOTB. I have one blog hop that happens every Thursday. Maybe I'll take a look at how 2015 plays out for weekend coordination.
      Thanks so much,
      Dixie

  8. I don't take on much of anything without asking YouTube what to do. After I moved into my current house, I couldn't figure out why the kitchen lights dimmed and wouldn't become bright again. I finally discovered a tiny lever next to the light switch. The tiny lever dims the lights. I had never seen such a thing before.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Aw, you have the newer model switch. Mine is a round knob. YouTube helped me do extra insulation, layout and build concrete garden walls, and starting new bamboo plants. It's really neat.
