Happiness at Thanksgiving
Happiness is finding thankfulness, regardless of the situation I'm experiencing. We're all human so I know each of you can relate. Finding a blessing among the turmoil / trials of life. Things challenge my faith but going forward is the right decision. Then, there are times I simply stand still and wait.
Since my last blog post of August, I had a second stroke. Once again the left side of my body was affected. So there's a little more loss of mobility but I keep hanging on. Therapy sessions are suspended for this week's holiday. Not to be hindered, I set up my own obstacle course, around my yard, for daily walks. Luckily it's Fall with lots of leaves which I'm slowly raking mid-morning. It's so nice to feel the warmth of the sun. Who knew raking leaves would turn into a blessing by keeping me mobile?
My birthday is the day before Thanksgiving Day. I plan to make myself a batch of peanut butter cookies. I might save some for "the turkey gang,"aka my family gathering. This year I'm headed to my older brother's home... at "Lake Wiley," South Carolina. I imagine it will be a bit cooler temperature lakeside than it is at my home. Not to worry... I have lots of comfy sweatshirts and sweaters.
I really miss online time but sitting does not help much. It's better to be up, moving about. Still this is a week when lots of people are celebrating, and I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving or a Happy Week!
Now it's your turn....
1- Do you celebrate Thanksgiving or a similar type holiday?
2- What's your favorite side dish for Thanksgiving?
3 - Are you a sweatshirt or a sweater person?
4 - Do you have a turkey joke to share?
5 - Do you have a prayer request?
Lastly... sending love and warm wishes!
~ Dixie

If up and about works, have to do it, health comes before blogging. Hopefully you stay on the mend with no more setbacks. Enjoy your thanksgiving and birthday!

Glad to hear from you again, DIXIE POLKA. Been wondering about you. I'm happy to hear you'll be together with family on Thanksgiving.
ReplyDelete1- Do you celebrate Thanksgiving or a similar type holiday?
Sure, sure. As I did last year, I'll be spending Thanksgiving with a co-worker's family.
2- What's your favorite side dish for Thanksgiving?
Stuffing, fo' sho.
3 - Are you a sweatshirt or a sweater person?
Neither. I prefer stuffs I can zip or button up and down as the temperatures shift.
4 - Do you have a turkey joke to share?
Q: Why did the turkey cross the road?
A: He was chasing the chicken.
5 - Do you have a prayer request?
World peace. And if I could slip in one more, I hope I get a pony for Christmas. (Actually, the second one is more realistic.)

I was so happy to see you post an update. This post is a reminder to me that there are problems and then there are things that I am just a whiner about. You keep working on getting better and don't worry about the blogging-- though updates are greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteSo my answers:
1. Yes, I celebrate Thanksgiving. As my niece says, it's the feast that gives us energy for Christmas!
2. I have to pick one?! How unfair. Dessert. Is that a side dish?
3. I like both, but wear sweatshirts most often. Unless you count cardigans. I love my cardigans.
4. Where does a 400 lb turkey sleep? Anywhere he wants to.
5. A cure for cancer be awesome! And prayers for you, Dixie. Stay strong...keep working at getting well.
Hope things improve for you.
ReplyDelete1. Yes.
2. Too many to pick. The rolls, the mashed potatoes, the candied yams, it's all so yummy.
3. Whatever's available. I don't tend to be picky when I'm cold.
4. Not right now.
5. That we all survive the next few years.
Have a happy Thanksgiving.
Dixie Darlin', I'm so sorry, but thanks for giving us an update. You are a brave lady. A few years ago, one of my sisters had a heart attack followed by a stroke. She was in the hospital for months, but made a full recovery. It was hard, but it happened. I do indeed celebrate Thanksgiving. We always begin dinner by talking about something for which we give thanks. My favorite side dish is stuffing, but the stuffing has to be roasted inside the turkey. One day last week I wore my peach sweatshirt that has gold angel wings on the back. Then on Sunday I wore a sweater. So I swing both ways on the sweatshirt/sweater topic. I don't have a turkey joke, but I have a funny holiday story. About 25 years ago, we moved to Western Maryland, where we built our dream house that I planned myself. Our first Christmas in the house, we had an open house and invited all of our new friends and our old friends from the Baltimore-D.C. area. I served hot chicken salad in a chafing dish. My husband who is not my husband anymore poured the denatured alcohol into the holder under the dish and lit a match. He set the dining room table on fire! I heard him say, Oh, no! Oh, no! I ran into the dining room and we managed to put out the fire quickly. We took off the burned tablecloth and covered the burn on the table with a fresh tablecloth. We opened the window to let out the smoke. Ten minutes later, the guests started to arrive. About a hundred people came and went that day, and no one ever knew that we'd had a fire. I'm glad we could laugh about it. My prayer request is a big one. It's for my son. He's not well. That's all I can say. I have been praying for you, Dixie, and I'll continue to do so.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Sorry to hear of your continued health problems Dixie, you are truly a wonderful inspiration to many of us.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanks Giving.
Yvonne.
Holy hell, Dixie, sorry to hear about the new stroke! I really thought the danger has passed and you were getting better! Now don't you go and stop with the physiotherapy, dear! It is just another obstacle you need to cover! I wish shitty destiny wasn't throwing so many obstacles in front of us!
ReplyDeleteHope you will manage to relax at your family's Thanksgiving and I'm wishing you a happy birthday. It is a comfort to me knowing you're spending it with the family!
I prefer sweaters which look like sweatshirts :) with zippers and hoodies, there you go, Dezzy always has to be special! And I love me cardigans
Forgot to wish you a Happy Birthday when it arrives.
ReplyDeleteDo keep as well as you can, will be thinking about you.
Yvonne.
Hi Dixie. I have just returned from a short break from Blogging; sorry to hear about your stroke. I wish you a belated Happy Birthday and Thanksgiving. We don't have that in the UK but are very aware of it! I think that sweeping (dry) leaves in the Autumn sunshine is one of the joys of life - and great therapy!

Sorry to hear about your health situations, but your wish for love and warm wishes says a great deal. Sounds like you're back on a road to some kind of normalcy, whatever that might be.
ReplyDeleteI've been so cold (ha! yeah, cold here in Los Angeles) that I've been wearing sweatshirts a lot. I'm not much of a sweater person--to itchy for me.
My favorite side dish? Oyster dressing--it was a tradition in my family, but not many people seem to like it much. I usually make a small batch just for myself and make fruit and sausage stuffing for everyone else (it's really good too!).
This year my wife and I did Thanksgiving alone for the first time. It was actually very nice. We usually have about 30 people over which gets expensive and is very tiring.
Have a great Christmas!

I don't know what to say, Dixie, except that I'm glad you're still around. Yes, I can relate but this is not about me. Just so you know you're on my X-mas card.
ReplyDeleteThinking about you.
DeleteHappy Holidays, Dixie! I hope you are doing reasonably well and that life is getting better. Today is the solstice and the return of the light. I will raise a glass to you.
