Winter ~ sights ~ sounds ~ smells

Morning brought a dusting of snow.
How was I to know...
That a powdered-sugar world would be waiting...
     ~     ~     ~
Can you smell snow in the air?
Two days before this dusting I could smell it.
I knew it was on the way.
There are no words to describe it's smell.
The only thing I can tell you is that it smells like 'Christmas.'
Can you smell Christmas?
      ~     ~     ~
I was smelling spring until three days ago.
It smells like fresh dirt.
Clean, wet clothes hanging on a clothesline.
Green shoots of spring onions.
    ~     ~     ~
Does anyone else have these sensations?
Am I the only one who might be nuts?

  1. Most people can smell the snow in the air :) And rain too... I also love the smell of first frost in the air

    1. Yes, but you bowl, and I couldn't do that if someone paid me. All I can do is watch, mesmerized.

    1. In a strange sort of way - that's comforting, Pat. Can Cat smell anything?

  4. I'm nutty right along with you. We don't have snow here in Texas as a regular thing, but I remember in Illinois when my dad would point out the changes in the season by the aroma in the air. Other animals can tell, why not us?

    1. You know, Linda Kay, it's great finding so many people that do. I was wondering about myself. Good point about the animals.

I forgot you were Texas. I should know from all of the lovely 'fence posts' you've done.

  5. I live in the foothills, and sometimes I think I can tell a change in the weather by the feel and smell of earth.

    1. Hi Donna. I enjoyed your review on Hider.

I know. Sometimes I have a sensitivity that baffles me. It's nice hearing other people have this... hmm... gift(?). I live in the piedmont, which is flat. Such diverse country in my state.

  6. Winters aren't too bad, but come spring I can smell the sweaty sneakers lined up in the laundry room. I'd rather smell the rain and snow.

    1. That is sad and funny. Bless your heart (smile). Put a small bowl of baking soda on the shelf with the shoes. Maybe that'll help.

  7. I can smell snow in the air or the freshness after the rain or the scent of upturned earth. I love how vivid my scenes are at times. It makes me feel I've been awaken from a deep sleep with its newness. These are all happy, pleasant smells and like Empty Nest Insider points out there are also some not so nice smells that come with the seasons. lol

    1. Ooh, Cathy, "...upturned earth.." I know that one...
I am waiting on Spring! But last night's 5 inches of snow.... says no.
Your words sound so sweet and dreamy (smile).
