Welcome tough exterior

Geez, it's only November and the cold has been, well, cold. My thermostat peers back at me as if to say: "What's the problem? Crank me up! You know you want to, don't you?"

In lieu of becoming an icicle I would but until that point in time comes, I'm content to wear a home sweater of immense warming qualities. That and the utility companies just love to make me sweat - every winter! But, and aha(!) though they have the power, I control the knob. Back you vicious power companies!

What's up with the bat above? (You did wonder, right?) He's been calcified.  A crazy lake in Africa calcifies everything that comes near it. I'm not going into details. A Smithsonian article* describes it and shows more photos of animals caught in the trap. Now - doesn't that sound like the utility company strategy? Come closer - closer - charge!

I could have it as bad as that bat. Be it calcified or icicled... it's still a tough exterior to weather. Oh wait! He's dead but I'll be getting a bill soon. Let's hope by January it doesn't kill me too. If it does will the Smithsonian produce an article showing my frozen carcass? Let's seriously support that notion. Until then I suppose I should be as peaceful as a dove.

  1. It IS all about power.
The electrical kind in this country is a joke, load shedding as and when they want to, without warning. At least we're heading for summer, so bbq's will be the order of the day, heee heee heeee

    4. Yes but won't customs hassle you over the food? You are bringing bbq, right?

  2. The knob or switch is very tempting at times though, even if we are in control. Over here the next utility bills will arrive about a week before Christmas - and a happy Christmas to them too - huh!

    1. I cannot fathom waiting two months before the next utility bill. I want my torture in smaller doses. Ooh Mike, that's terrible but I suppose you're used to it?

  3. I hope you have a pair of big furry slippers too. Or at least thick socks.

  4. I'm afraid of this winter. Some say it will be terribly cold here in Europe... and we're afraid mother Russia won't give us gas for heating because the pipelines go through that pesky Ukraine....

    1. Oh my friend - that pains me for you! Here I am complaining (in a jokey manner), and you could be suffering this season. You'll be in my thoughts.

    2. We had a similar situation two years ago when Ukraine and mother Russia also had a dispute and we were without gas for a month or two. We had to burn coal, but due to extreme spring floods in my country our main mines are still under water.... and plus switching the system to coal from gas is such a pain in the bum! Wish I could burn my fat instead :)

  5. I turned on the heat over the weekend. If I don't turn on the heat when it dips below 80, Willy Dunne Wooters whines and complains that he'll get pneumonia. He's gone home again, and the heat is off. It's a beautiful day.

    Love,
    Janie

  6. Hi Dixie. After your break from Blogging you seem to have gone to posting every twenty minutes! I've been a bit busy lately so haven't always had time to post or comment but I usually do manage to read what you post!
Continuing my new experiment of naming the music I am listening to while posting or commenting - right now it's: Bob Dylan's 'Shelter From the Storm'

  7. We've been running the heat for a while now--it's been dropping down to 30 degrees at night here in Nashville for a couple of weeks. I wish I could just get through it with a sweater, but I'm a wimp.

    1. Oh my - Nashville. I was there one spring and it was cold then. I'd have to step up my game with a double set of insulated undies. Lately I'm sporting only the bottoms (shh) - our little secret - okay? That sweater with immense
warming qualities doesn't cover it all. ;)

  8. I read that article a few days ago about the calcified critters. Quite something isn't it? Luckily the cost of electricity (or hydro as it's called in Canada) is paid for by our landlords and is part of our rent. We really need heat in Canada but being in an apartment building it is better than being in a house, it stays warmer. However, we have already had a sprinkling of snow so, winter's definitely on its way.

    1. Hi Jo. The article and photos are so interesting - never knew a place like that existed.Sprinkling of snow already? Can you keep it up there until January?
I'm really enjoying your stories and recipes.

    1. Because of the photos' color I immediately thought the animals were frozen, which was something I did not want to be. It was really a stretch - but hey - it worked out well. They're not frozen and neither am I - yet.

Lawdy Alex, what else can you get on that blog? It's fun but I'm one of those little blog people that have to click on every button. Some nights I have to sleep over at your place just to take it all in!!
