Queen of Boo-boos strikes again!

If you have neighbors like I have, you like doing things for them, right? What if the good intention flops? Here's the story of how I became the Queen of Boo-boos:

The intent was to make a birthday cake for my neighbor... German Chocolate... sounded yummy to me. I have this terrible habit when shopping. I'll look at the item on the shelf, decide that's what I want, but then I grab the box right behind the front row box. You understand that, right? However, I didn't get German Chocolate cake mix. What? That particular box had been placed in the row of Devil's Food cake mixes. So what I got was... yep, Devil's Food! Ha! Then, wouldn't you know... the neighbor doesn't like Devil's Food cake!! So I'll make it for someone else, or at a later date for a holiday. Problem solved.

It turns out that he really wants a plain, but homemade Pound cake. It's not hard to make, but I've discovered I have a another problem. To make a Pound cake you really need a mixer; doing it by hand is outrageously difficult, (frown).

Three years before, the Queen of Boo-boos found her beater wands but couldn't find the hand mixer. So what did I do? I had tossed out the two beater wands. (Why keep them if I have no mixer? Sounds reasonable, right?) So I'm going to make the Pound cake and guess what I found? Geez Louise, the mixer was in a cabinet I rarely, if ever, use.. So now I have a hand mixer and no beater wands!!! (I m absolutely not a hoarder but in this case I wish I'd given it more thought.)

The neighbor has generously offered to purchase me a hand mixer.  Being the suspicious type, I wonder if I'll be "urged" to make him cakes or other stuff now? Oh, what to do? Do I accept his offer or seek out recipes that don't require a mixer?

What's your opinion?
Yes or no to his offer?
Have you ever had an experience along this line?
Do you toss out stuff thinking you may never need it?
Are you a Queen or King of Boo-boos?

  1. Actually, I have made a pound cake, mixing by hand. It isn't as hard as it sounds. Good luck with your decision to accept or not accept the mixer. Love the humorous tone of your post.

    1. Elizabeth, it's better to laugh than cry over my boo-boos. Besides who has that much tissue to waste?

By hand - another friend suggested I use a larger, metal spoon. That might do the trick.

  2. Mixers are cheap, so it won't commit you to too many cakes.

    1. Alex, you're right. When I searched online I was surprised that they hadn't increased much since I purchased mine, back in 1990's.

There are also some great new colors available!

    1. Oh Fran, you hit the nail on the head. He is nice, and an occasional cake won't kill me, right?!

  4. I too have made cakes by hand, didn't have any choice in the matter when I was a youngster and as Elizabeth says, it's not that difficult or hard. As for accepting the offer, if you like him, accept it.

    1. Jo, it's only difficult right now because my left hand and arm have mobility issues. I mostly type with the right.

Maybe I fear obligation, (smile). Thank you.

  5. Oh, I should add, we didn't have boxes of cake mix either in those days.

    1. I barely remember, but checking out my Mom's favorite recipes, everything seems to be from 'scratch'.

    ABSOLUTELY!!
That's one of the things I learned from my Pa. He passed away in 1996, but one of the things he repeatedly told me was: "Never take the first one."

I still don't know why he felt that way, but I think of him EVERY TIME I go shopping, because it's a rule I follow about 95%-97% of the time.

In fact, just last Sunday I needed to buy a... whaddaycallit? A "watering can"? You know, you fill it with water and it has a long spout for watering flowers, etc.?

So, the nice woman at Home Depot directs me to them. I take the first one, only because the second one was so far back on an upper shelf I couldn't reach it without climbing up on the lower shelves.

I go looking for something else at the opposite end of the store, but it keeps gnawing at me that I took the first watering can.

Finally, I couldn't stand it. I went back (hoping the nice lady wouldn't see me returning to the same shelf with a watering can already in hand) and I used the long spout on the first watering can to snag the second watering can and pull it forward where I could reach it.

Thanks, Pa, for this (one of many) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders you instilled in me!

(My Pa is also responsible for the fact that I can't take a drink of water from a drinking fountain without mentally saying, "You know what the Essenes said: Never pass up the opportunity to get a drink of water.")

If people had ANY IDEA how screwed up in the head I am...

I hate it when that happens. My thirty minute, "run in and get it" is destroyed. I spend twice the time shopping. Then again, it helps me to remember a store's layout for future reference. As if that's a consolation, right?

Right now - let's make a pact to NEVER go shopping together. We'd be in Home Depot for hours. Ha!

Have fun with your watering can, (smile).
