There's a monkey wrench in the works!

Oh, I'm sick - really. (Cough, cough, ache, blah, blah, etc.) The main concern is the shelter - I can't cook for people while I'm contagious. My back up person will take over for this week. I hate that, but I would want someone to be responsible in the same way. Actually the back up person is all excited!

My neighbor will be going to Pennsylvania for Christmas. He asked me to babysit his Tropical Love Bird. I used to have three birds and they were so sweet and trained! This little bird, named "Brisbane" has no idea who the boss is - and I'm not sure I'm up for it. I'd hate for him to spend a whole week in his little house, but the last time we were around each other, he landed on my shoulder and bit me on the cheek! In fact - the scab just dropped off last week(sigh). Not to worry, I haven't given a answer yet. Maybe I should ask for votes on this? But the neighbor has a little two year old grandson that he rarely sees, (thank you heart strings - beat me up!!)

Meanwhile here's some stuff I'm making. I can't post everything or "the sweet God-daughter" will know what she's getting for Christmas!(smile)(I know you're here.)

Chocolate dipped candy canes...

Leg warmers made from sweater sleeves...

Gingerbread cake with stenciled design in powdered sugar...

Christmas gifts for the neighbors...

Copied this for my front railings - it's gorgeous!
It's also, probably the reason I am sick - outside too long...

Normally, you know this as "Thursday Wrapping it up," but I've got a moment and I feel okay - so why not make it happen?
Meanwhile... Happy Birthday, Mom - I miss you!

  1. you're in total Christmas frenzy :)
I'm sure the birdy will survive without spreading its wings for a week. Some people never let them out of the cages.
Is that your fence or just a random picture?

    1. That's a random - my fence is split-rail around the property - 50 feet on the long end...

    2. Correction - 50 feet on the short end and that's why if it all falls down this coming year - I'll have less to decorate next Christmas.

Oh Dez - can you tell if Debra voted for or against the bird?

    3. I'm deliberately being cagey about my vote. But since you seem keen to know -- I would only babysit the bird if it remains in its cage the entire time. If that's not possible, then I would turn down the opportunity to babysit it.

  2. I babysat a bird once. The Budgie from Hell, I called it. It would let itself out of its cage, fly around my apartment and shit down my curtains. Little bastard.

Hey, are you Martha Friggin Stewart? I'm impressed!

    Feel better soon.

    2. I had a Budgie from Hell too. Martha Stewart? I oughta be locked up for getting myself sick! I decided to have a lot of fun.

    3. Wait! Debra -she who seeks... how did the bird let himself out? That would drive me insane(smile). We don't need to go there. Also I'm counting you as a no for the bird and a yes for me! :P

    4. HRH is Debra's late cat Her Royal Highness, the ultimate star of blogosphere :) Some might even say she was more famous than Debs herself :)

    5. Aw no! Wait... if HRH pays the bird a visit - is HRH is a ghost? This is way too deep for me.

    6. Alas, the Budgie from Hell was before HRH's time. My pets then were rabbits and they were USELESS in controlling that bird. The budgie could unlatch the cage using its foot somehow. They are clever, for birdbrains. Thanks for your kind words about HRH, Dezzy!

Yeah, Christmas makes me sick, too!

    I'm kidding. I LOVE Christmas.

At least you're getting the sickness over with BEFORE Christmas Day.

I once babysat my best Girlfriend's parrot while she had to travel back East for a week. His name was Finian (after 'Finian's Rainbow', I think) but everyone called him "That Damned Chicken!"

So there I was taking care of him and he walks down the wood rod I've got him on and bites me on the hand. I could have killed that Damned Chicken, but I knew what that would do to my Girlfriend, because she loved that fuhken Finian even more than she loved me.

I finally got him back in his cage, but you can be sure he didn't get out of that cage again until Girlfriend returned.

Parrots live a long time, but unfortunately That Damned Chicken died about a year and a half or two years ago. I'm just glad my old Girlfriend was, by that time, dead herself... er--- I mean, she was married with children by then. If Finian had died before she had children to love, it would have been even more devastating to her.

    Yak Later...

    1. Hi ~D-FensDogg!
Merry Christmas, buddy. Yep, getting sick before is always best. Of course all of those cards I sent are probably contaminated! (Probably got the virus off of a stamp - don't start Dix.)

Well, I think you've given new meaning to, "Taste the Rainbow." I'm a bit skittish myself when it comes to Brisbane's beak. What a honker! Spare the rod, spoil the boid... I don't blame you, how were you to know?

That's the point - how to get him to mind when he's had no training? I hand-fed my cockatiel. When I said, "step up,"(meaning step up onto my finger) he'd look at me like, "how high"? I hate it, but "Brizzy" might end up in the cage for the week. I'm not too worried about the neighbor. I have a second cage (For trapping Raccoons) in the basement. Don't fret, I always call the animal shelter and they retrieve the raccoons - takes 'em a year to make the circle back home. And since they don't taste like Chicken - another piece of wildlife is saved. (It's good exercise, and there's one I've kinda adopted. I call him "Charlie".)(smile)

I guess I should say,"sorry about the best girlfriend," then again if she was the best - then you're probably doing okay with the lesser of the herd. Worse things could have happened, like being bitten by a child. Also, seems like you gave her the boid - back - just in time(hmm?)

This is too much fun! From "Charlotte - Caroline," Merry Christmas, from Dixie!

Yak later? Not sure if I have anything to post about those guys. Can it be fiction?

      Correction on the count:

I apologize again! Hope Favorite Young Man feels better soon!!

  5. No for the bird. I agree, it won't hurt it not to be let out for a week. Sorry you're sick. Miserable time to be ill. Wishing you all the best.

    1. Thank you, Jo, I do feel better. Vitamins have helped. I made your soup tonight; the roast took longer than I expected. It was really good. I added a bit too much onion but it's more vitamin C.
Funny how things go. I haven't even completed the tree. Should the bird be here and I do let him out, I don't want him tangled in the tree. I just don't know - but the answer will come shortly.
      Thank you for visiting me!!

  6. I love that comic! I also love the present pics. If I were you, I'd take the bird and just let him stay in the cage. It's a week. He'll live. I hope you recover from your flu soon. Have a wonderful Christmas! :)

  7. there was a time when i had parrots, conures and giant cockatoos. i quickly learned that parrots can become completely psychotic if you don't give them the attention they're accustomed to receiving.

    1. Hi Billy - I was headed to your house to read what's up over there! Yes! I suspect this bird may be psychotic - I plan to play soothing Christmas Music. Wonder if I have a copy of "Carol of the Birds"?

Merry Christmas, friend. Thank you again for the Christmas song by the Pogues! I think I play it every day! You'll be in my thoughts - your recent loss and all the things we all go through for our beloved pets/family(smile).

    1. Cathrina, I have enjoyed getting to know you. I can't help visiting on "Celebrate the small things" days! I hope you'll have a wonderful Christmas. Try the candy canes - they're so easy, and can be done in a matter of minutes. I like to keep extras for surprise visitors... Zip lock bags and little ribbons.

Looks like 7 yeses to babysit the bird! I'll do it!!!

    1. Linda, they're so easy. You can buy them in different sizes too. Sometimes I dip them in chocolate, then roll them in crushed peppermint... double dose.

The bird is watching the screen over my shoulder. The neighbor dropped him off today. He's enjoying banging his little bells. I thought I heard Christmas music for a second there(smile).
