Is this Surreal?

I don't really understand 'surreal' ideology. Often the blogs I read that 'have gone surreal' are out of my league. However, I'm thinking that maybe this photo is surreal. If not, let me know, and I'll change the title.

The photo credit is not mine; a neighbor shared it with me and she requested anonymity.

That's all. :)

  1. Hey Dixie,
I thought it would be good to drop in and post a comment. "Ouch...I just landed on your comment page..:-)
Having some dude in a red suit hanging around on a chimney is pretty surreal. Having same dude taking some 'electrical relief' over the side of the roof is most definitely surreal.
    Glowing wishes, Gary xx

  2. Ah, Gary... 'king of surreal'; I knew you could validate it if it was really surreal. Good of you to drop by; not lke Santa, who's dropping on. :) "Electrical relief" eh?
You know those stories... "It was a blinding light from above that turned me around." Oh well.
Please watch your step; the comment page is slippery when lighted. xx

  3. Dear Dixie,
The Oxford English Dictionary's definition of surreal is, "unreal; dreamlike; bizarre" and the word itself is derived from the 20th Century "surrealist" movement in art and literature which attempted to "express the subconscious mind by using dream imagery and bizarre juxtapositions". Hence I remember one surrealist work of art which represented a telephone as a lobster. So, I cannot altogether agree with Gary on this one. While showing Santa taking some "electrical relief" may be a good joke, I think it lacks the element of the truly bizarre and dreamlike which would make it authentically "surreal".
Hope this helps, or it may just confuse you even more!
With Very Best Wishes and hoping you have a Very Merry Christmas,
    David.

  4. Hi Dixie
I actually like pictures better than words sometimes. This one is cute but I likke the ones where you really have to think about what it is you're looking at. Thanks for posting it!

  5. Dear David,
Oh, okay then. Not to worry, as I'm sure something else will come along and I can ask again: "Is this surreal?"

I really appreciate the 'Oxford' definition; things are clear as mud. A 'telephone as a lobster', certainly says bizarre to me too. However it gives me more understanding of the surreal playing field. :)

    Merry Christmas,
    Dixie

  6. Hi Heather,
I come from the old school that says: "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Thank you for taking time to have a peek and leave a comment. It gave me a chuckle too.
