Oops!

Give yourself an hour to cool off before responding to someone who has provoked you. It if involves something really important, give yourself overnight.

Good advice or not?

Easier said than done?

Not that I’m looking to be provoked; I’m looking for ways to give myself a break.

I don’t deserve to be provoked by anyone, and most certainly, I choose to stop compounding the issue with a rude response.

Now the big decision: how large should I write this on my office bulletin board so I’ll see it before I respond?

“Take charge of your attitude. Don’t let someone else choose it for you.”

  1. Excellent advice, and I am going to try very hard to follow your sage words. I may perhaps need more than one hour to cool off though, and that is the fault of my Irish temper which does have a tendency to flare with very little notice. Loved the image you posted with your entry! Brenda

  2. Hi Dixie,
That's the way to handle it. For an initial reaction may enflame the situation.
I think those who would provoke, to get a reaction, really need to deal with their issues.
Like you say, a rude response may compound the situation. Your calmness and your integrity will prevail. You have control of your responses.
    Warm wishes your way, Gary.

  3. Brenda,
I have chosen to try new parameters; my own "sage-ness" has failed miserably. Irish? Hadn't even considered my Irish-ness; could I possibly use it as an excuse if all else fails? :O)
Baby Jessie, the butterfly, and I thank you! Dixie

  5. Dear Gary,
Kind, true words from you, as I focus on making things better not bigger! My response-control becomes a reality, no longer just a goal.
Your empathy and friendship is greatly appreciated.
    In peacefulness, Dixie

  6. I think everyone has difficulty controlling their emotions at times. When others provoke a bad situation, well, the normal urge is to strike back...defending what one thinks is right.

Your advice is right...taking a little time to think about the anger will often ease the brunt of it. I tend to lean with the 'sleep on it' remedy. All things look better in the morning.(smile)

I'm really enjoying your blog, Dixie. What a pleasure it's been meeting you. Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

Oh, I must tell you before I go, I love the picture of the adorable baby and butterfly. It's a beautiful image...

    'Til next time,
    Mattie

  7. Hi Mattie,

The photo spoke volumes to me concerning my behavior. Someone's words, weighing less than the tiny, gentle butterfly, had provoked me. Rather than take some good advice, I chose to do as the baby did: I proceeded to let my discomfort be known!(loudly) I might as well have grabbed the butterfly and crushed it in my hand for all the good my response accomplished.
I may as well have "slept" on the butterfly! Hopefully you do not understand.:)
Mattie, it is my pleasure to meet you. I thank you for your kind remarks.
    In peace,

    Dixie

I am most happy that you stopped by.
